چکیده

ABSTRACT G1, also known as Mayall II, is one of the most massive star clusters in M31. Its mass, ellipticity, and location outer halo make it a compelling candidate for former nuclear cluster. This paper presents an integrated light abundance analysis based on moderately high-resolution (R = 15 000) spectrum obtained with spectrograph Hobby–Eberly Telescope 2007 2008. To independently determine metallicity, moderate-resolution ∼ 4000) Ca ii triplet lines near-infrared was Astrophysical Research Consortium’s 3.5-m telescope at Apache Point Observatory. From spectrum, G1 found to be metal-poor cluster, $[\rm {Fe/H}]~=~-0.98\pm 0.05$. shows signs α-enhancement (based Mg, Ca, Ti) lacks s-process enhancements seen dwarf galaxies comparisons Y, Ba, Eu), indicating that originated fairly galaxy. Intriguingly, exhibits Na Al enhancement, unique signature GCs – which suggests G1’s formation intimately connected GC formation. high [Na/Fe] extends previous trends cluster velocity dispersion even higher mass regime, implying are more able retain Na-enhanced ejecta. The effects intracluster spreads discussed subsequent paper. Ultimately, chemical properties resemble other M31 GCs, though shares some similarities extragalactic clusters.

M31 Globular Cluster Abundances from High-resolution, Integrated-light Spectroscopy

We report the first detailed chemical abundances for 5 globular clusters (GCs) in M31 from highresolution (R ∼ 25,000) spectroscopy of their integrated light. These GCs are the first in a larger set of clusters observed as part of an ongoing project to study the formation history of M31 and its globular cluster population. The data presented here were obtained with the HIRES echelle spectrograp...

Detailed abundances from integrated-light spectroscopy: Milky Way globular clusters

Context. Integrated-light spectroscopy at high spectral resolution is rapidly maturing as a powerful way to measure detailed chemical abundances for extragalactic globular clusters (GCs). Aims. We test the performance of our analysis technique for integrated-light spectra by applying it to seven well-studied Galactic GCs that span a wide range of metallicities. Methods. Integrated-light spectra...

Chemical Abundances and Yields from Massive Stars

Stellar rotation produces an internal mixing of the elements due to shear instability and meridional circulation. This leads to observable N/C enhancements in massive stars above about 7–9 M⊙. Rotation also favours mass loss by stellar winds. Mass loss effects dominate for masses above 30 M⊙, while mixing dominates below that limit. The effects of mixing are also much larger at lower metallicit...

The Detailed Chemical Properties of M31 Star Clusters I. Fe, Alpha and Light Elements

We present ages, [Fe/H] and abundances of the alpha elements Ca I, Si I, Ti I, Ti II, and light elements Mg I, Na I, and Al I for 31 globular clusters in M31, which were obtained from high resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR> 60) echelle spectra of their integrated light. All abundances and ages are obtained using our original technique for high resolution integrated light abundance ana...

Detailed Chemical Abundances of Extragalactic Globular Clusters

We outline a method to measure the detailed chemical composition of ex-tragalactic (unresolved) globular clusters (GCs) from echelle spectra of their integrated light. Our goal is to use this method to measure abundance patterns of GCs in distant spiral and elliptical galaxies to constrain their formation histories. To develop this technique we have obtained a " training set " of integrated– li...
